The exam is developed by the Cambridge University and jointly managed by IDP and the British Council.

Before giving the exam, it is necessary to acquaint yourself with the test format of IELTS. There are two versions of the test. They are IELTS Academics and IELTS General Training.
The IELTS Academic module is for candidates who want to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and for those who wish to join a professional organization in an English-speaking country.
The IELTS General Training module is for candidates who want to emigrate to an English speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK), and for those that want to train or study at a below degree level.

THE TEST COMPONENTS

IELTS ACADEMIC IELTS GENERAL TRAINING MODULE
Listening:

  • Four recorded monologues and conversations.
  • Time- 30 minutes and an additional 10 minutes to transfer the answers from the question paper to the answer sheet.

Reading:

  • Three long reading passages with tasks.
  • Texts are taken from books, journals.
  • It includes verbal as well as non-verbal material like diagrams and graphs.

Time- 60 minutes

  • Three reading passages with tasks.
  • Texts are taken from official documents and company handbooks.
  • Section 1 contains 2-3 short factual texts.
  • Section 2 contains two short, work-related texts.
  • Section 3 consists of one long text.

Time- 60 minutes

Writing:

  • A task of at least 150 words in which the candidate should explain a table, graph or diagram.
  • Another short essay of at least 250 words.

Time- 60 minutes

Writing:

  • Letter writing of at least 150 words.
  • Essay task of at least 250 words.

Time- 60 minutes

Speaking:

  • Face to face interview.
  • Comprises of short questions, speaking about a familiar topic and discussion.

Time- 11 to 14 minutes

Speaking:

  • Face to face interview.
  • Comprises of short questions, speaking about a familiar topic and discussion.

Time- 11 to 14 minutes

The test lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes.

SCORE IN IELTS

All IELTS scores are between 0 and 9. You will get a band score for each skill (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and also an overview band score.
